So I have been hearing a lot of comments today about the Chocolate Factory coming down. While it is true that it has closed and that production has moved to the new facilities in Hershey, it is not true that the factory is being demolished. I know that we all miss the smell of Hershey's Chocolate in the morning and are sorry for those who have moved or no longer have jobs at the old factory but the building is not coming down. Actually it is public record at the Township Offices and being a member of the Design and Review Board, I have seen the plans as you can.
The present work you see being done in just separating the two buildings to expose a very large outside courtyard, that over the years was built around. The factory is actually many buildings that have gone up over the years as the factory expanded. The work being done will actually bring back the building to look more like it originally did in the past, similar to the Press Building. The curb appeal on Chocolate Avenue will actually be beautiful The left side will continue to be used as expanded office space by the Hershey Company and the right side to be developed down the road. Once the tunnel and the bridge and the new road 743 are complete the Main Entrance to these offices will be off of 743 and will be beautifully landscaped, and have real modifications like bringing back the original windows that you can kind of make out if you look real hard. Also if you look at the railroad track side you will see brick work that Spells out Hershey's Chocolate, something a lot of people dont even see. And don't worry about the bushes or the stacks either, they are all in the preservation plans. Yes change is hard and sometimes sad, but the rumors of the factory being torn down are greatly exagerated. Trust me.
